# Tutorial 9: adding a gateway

How a gateway fits on top of buttons you have already paired by hand, and where to find the detailed steps for the eLAN gateways.

*Part 2 — Tutorials. Do* [*Tutorial 1*](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md) *first. This page is short on purpose.*

## What you will do

Take a light that already works from a wall button and make it controllable from the app too, without losing the button.

This page explains the idea and sends you to the right pages. It does **not** repeat the gateway's own steps.

## The model: two steps, in this order

    S1["Step 1
Pair the button to the unit by hand
(PROG button)"] --> S2["Step 2
Add the unit to the gateway
(by the address on its front)"]
    S2 --> S3["App, cloud, timers,
scenes, automation"]
```
1. **Pair by hand first.** Do the pairing from [Tutorial 1](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md) and later tutorials. The button then works on its own, even if your router or the internet is off.
2. **Then add the unit to the gateway.** The gateway gives you the app, the cloud, timers, scenes and logic that button counting cannot do. The unit keeps the pairings you made by hand.
## Which gateway?
| Gateway         | Notes                                                                                      |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **eLAN-RF-204** | Wi-Fi gateway. Up to 70 iNELS Wireless devices. App, iNELS Cloud, schedules and automation |
| **eLAN-RF-103** | Gateway of the same family                                                                 |
| **RFTC-3**      | A thermostat that also acts as a gateway, for heating and fan-coil systems                 |
## What you need to know before you start
{% stepper %}
{% step %}
#### The gateway needs a network
The eLAN-204 connects to your home Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz). Set it up first with [First Start](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/system-units/elan-204/first-start.md) and [How to Use eLAN-RF-204](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/system-units/elan-204/how-to-use-elan-rf-204.md).
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
#### A receiver is added by its address
Every receiver has an **address printed on its front** (one per output). The gateway uses that address. You do not need to press PROG on the receiver for this.
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
#### A detector must be set for a gateway
A detector has a **DIP switch** that tells it whether it is paired with a unit or connected to a gateway. For the RFMD-100 it is DIP 3, for the RFWD-100 and the RFSF-100 it is DIP 2. Set it to **ON** for a gateway. The detector then sends its status when it changes and every 120 minutes. Set DIP switches before inserting the batteries. See [Tutorial 5](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-5-detectors-motion-light-door-or-window-flood.md).
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
#### Keep the hand-made pairings
Do not clear the memory of a unit just because you added it to a gateway. A unit paired by hand **and** added to a gateway works from both.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
{% hint style="info" %}
This tutorial has no "test" step of its own. The test is the one you already know: the wall button must still work after the unit is added to the gateway.
{% endhint %}
## If it did not work
| ----------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The wall button stopped working after adding to the gateway | The unit's memory was cleared                                                     | Pair the button again ([Tutorial 1](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md))                      |
| A detector is not seen by the gateway                       | DIP switch not set for a gateway, or batteries inserted before the switch was set | Set the DIP switch, remove the batteries, wait 30 s, insert them again                                                          |
| The gateway cannot find the unit                            | Wrong address, or the unit is out of range                                        | Check the address on the unit's front. See [Tutorial 8](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-8-range-and-repeaters.md) for range |
## What you learned
* Direct pairing comes first. A gateway is added on top.
* A receiver is added to a gateway by its address, not by PROG.
* A detector needs its DIP switch set for a gateway.
