# Tutorial 7: fixing mistakes

Clear one button, clear the whole unit, pair again, and read what every LED pattern means. For when a button does the wrong thing.

## What you will do

You will learn the three repairs. They solve almost every problem.

|   | Problem                                               | Repair                                               |
| - | ----------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | One button does the wrong thing | **Clear that button**, pair it again |
| 2 | The unit is a mess, or you do not know what is paired | **Clear the whole unit** (factory reset), pair again |
| 3 | You are not sure what the unit is doing | Read the **LED** |

{% hint style="info" %}
**The memory is in the unit, not in the button.** You always clear on the receiver. Taking the battery out of a controller removes nothing.
{% endhint %}

## You need

* A unit that is already paired with at least one button. Here: **RFSAI-61B-SL** ([unit page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md)).
* Your unit's PROG times from [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md). **They differ between units.**

For the RFSAI-xxB-SL family the times are:

| Hold PROG for                          | Single-channel (61B-SL, 11B-SL, 61BPF-SL) | Two-channel (62B-SL) |
| -------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | -------------------- |
| Enter programming                      | **2 s**                                   | **3–5 s**            |
| **Clear one button**                   | **5 s**                                   | **8 s**              |
| **Clear whole memory** (factory reset) | **8 s**                                   | **12 s**             |

For other units, look them up in Appendix A. Do not use these numbers for them.

## 1. Clear one button

Use this when a button has the wrong function, or when you want to unpair it.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Hold PROG for the clear time

Hold **PROG** on the unit for its *clear one button* time (**5 s** on a single-channel RFSAI, **8 s** on the RFSAI-62B-SL). Release when the LED flashes **4 times per second**.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If the LED only flashes once per second, you are in *programming* mode, not *clear* mode. Release PROG, wait for the LED to return to normal, and hold longer.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press the button you want to remove

Press that **controller button**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Wait for the long flash

**One long flash** confirms. The unit goes back to normal operation.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## 2. Clear the whole unit (factory reset)

Use this when you do not know what is paired, or when the unit was used before.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Hold PROG for the clear whole memory time

Hold **PROG** for **8 s** (RFSAI-62B-SL: **12 s**). The LED flashes 4 times per second.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Release and wait

All buttons are removed. The unit stays in **programming mode**. The LED now flashes **every 0.5 s**, for up to **4 minutes**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Pair now, or leave

Pair new buttons right away ([Tutorial 1](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md)). To leave without pairing, **short press PROG** (under 1 s).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Clearing does **not** change the unit's **memory function** setting (what the output does after a power cut).

There is **no longer reset** than this. The 8 s (or 12 s) hold *is* the factory reset.
{% endhint %}

### Watch the clock

PROG does a different thing at each time. Holding too long takes you past the step you wanted.

| You hold PROG for | Single-channel RFSAI                     | Two-channel RFSAI-62B-SL |
| ----------------- | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| Under 1 s         | Output switches (or: finish programming) | same                     |
| Programming       | 2 s                                      | 3–5 s                    |
| Clear one button  | 5 s                                      | 8 s                      |
| Clear everything  | 8 s                                      | 12 s                     |

## 3. Pair it again

After clearing, pair the button as in [Tutorial 1, section 3](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md). Check the number of presses in [Appendix B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-b-functions-by-number-of-presses.md), and leave **1 s between presses**.

## 4. What each LED pattern means

The LED on the unit tells you the mode. These patterns come from the RFSAI-xxB-SL manual. Other units are usually the same. Their own page lists any difference.

| LED on the unit | Meaning | What to do |
| -------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Steady, follows the output                   | Normal operation                                   | —                                                           |
| **Flashes once per second** | Programming mode, waiting for a button | Press the controller button N times |
| Lights briefly at each press                 | Command received                                   | —                                                           |
| **Flashes twice per second** | Timing mode: it is measuring a delay time | Wait for the time you want, then press the same button once |
| **Flashes 4 times per second** | Clear mode | Press the button to remove, or wait |
| One **long flash** | The button was removed | The unit is back to normal |
| **Flashes every 0.5 s** (up to 4 min) | Memory cleared. The unit waits in programming mode | Pair, or short press PROG |
| **3 blinks** at the end of programming | Memory function is **on** | — |
| **One long light** at the end of programming | Memory function is **off** | — |
| Green / red (RFSAI-62B-SL)                   | Green = output 1, red = output 2                   | Select the output before programming                        |

| LED on the controller | Meaning |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Short red blink after holding the pairing button 1 s | Controller is in pairing mode |
| Double flash after re-inserting the battery (older controllers) | Normal mode |
| Fast flashing (older controllers) | Compatibility mode ([Pairing reference, section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md)) |

## 5. Other units

The same ideas work on every unit, but the times differ. Two examples from unit instruction manuals:

| Unit | Enter programming | Clear one button | Clear whole memory | LED while clearing |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------ | ---------------- | ------------------ | -------------------------------- |
| RFDEL-71B-SL (dimmer)  | Hold until the LED flashes once per second | 5 s              | 8 s                | 4 flashes per second, then 0.5 s |
| RFJA-32B-SL (shutters) | Hold until the LED flashes once per second | 5 s              | 8 s                | 4 flashes per second, then 0.5 s |

{% hint style="info" %}
For all other units use [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md). Do not use the numbers of the RFSAI family for them.
{% endhint %}

## If it did not work

| What you see                                                    | Cause                                                  | Fix                                                                                                                                  |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| LED flashes 4× per second when you wanted programming | PROG held too long | Do not press a controller button. Release, wait, hold for the shorter *programming* time |
| The button is still active after clearing | It is paired to another unit too | Clear it **on that unit** as well. One button can control many units |
| Button works but with the wrong function | Presses too fast or miscounted | Clear that button. Pair it again with 1 s between presses |
| The unit "forgot" the light state after a power cut, or did not | Memory function setting | Check the memory function at the end of programming (3 blinks = on) |
| A new button will not pair | The unit memory is full | Clear buttons you no longer use. RFSAI-61B-SL holds 25, RFSAI-62B-SL 12 per output |
| Unit is in programming mode but ignores the controller | Controller not in pairing mode, or an older generation | Hold its pairing button 1 s first. Older controllers: [Pairing reference B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md) |

## What you learned

* Clearing is always done on the **receiver**.
* PROG: short = finish, then longer for programming, clear one, clear everything. Times are in [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md).
* The factory reset **is** the longest hold. There is nothing beyond it.
* The LED tells you where you are.

## Try this before moving on

1. Pair a spare button, then clear just that button and check that the others still work.
2. Practise holding PROG and watching the LED change at 2 s, 5 s and 8 s.
3. Do a factory reset on a spare unit, then pair one button again.
