# Tutorial 6: several buttons, a wired button and a central OFF

Pair several buttons with several units, add an existing wired button, and make one button switch off everything.

## What you will build

Two lights in one room. Each has its own button. One more button switches **both** off. A wired wall button that was already in the wall also switches one of the lights.

## You need

* **Two RFSAI-61B-SL** switch units, wired as in [Tutorial 1](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md) ([unit page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md))
* **RFWB-40/MPW** wall controller (4 buttons), or any controller with a pairing button
* Two lights
* An existing **wired button** for light A (optional)

{% hint style="info" %}
How many buttons can one unit take? **RFSAI-61B-SL: 25.** RFSAI-62B-SL: 12 per output. One button can control as many units as you like. Each unit remembers its own pairings.
{% endhint %}

## 1. The pairing recipe

You will use the same recipe for every pairing. Only the **button**, the **unit** and the **number of presses** change.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Controller into pairing mode

Hold the controller's pairing button for **1 s**. The red LED gives a short blink.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the unit for **2 s** (RFSAI-61B-SL). The LED flashes once per second. Do not hold it for 5 s: that starts clearing.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press the button N times

Press the controller button **N times, about 1 s apart.** The unit's LED lights at each press.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the unit (under 1 s). Then short press the controller's pairing button.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Other units have other PROG times: look yours up in [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md). Presses and functions: [Appendix B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-b-functions-by-number-of-presses.md).

## 2. The plan

Write this down first. Then follow it one line at a time.

| Pairing | Controller button | Unit | Presses | Function               |
| ------- | ----------------- | ---- | ------- | ---------------------- |
| 1       | Button 1          | A    | 4×      | Impulse relay (toggle) |
| 2       | Button 2          | B    | 4×      | Impulse relay (toggle) |
| 3       | Button 4          | A    | 3×      | Switch off             |
| 4       | Button 4          | B    | 3×      | Switch off             |
| 5       | Wired button      | A    | 4×      | Impulse relay (toggle) |

## 3. Do the pairings

#### Pairings 1 and 2: one button per light

Use the recipe for pairing 1 (button 1, unit A, 4 presses). Then use it again for pairing 2 (button 2, unit B, 4 presses).

After each, test it: the light must toggle on every press.

#### Pairings 3 and 4: the central OFF

The central OFF is **one button paired to many units**. You do nothing special: you just repeat the recipe once per unit.

1. Recipe for **button 4, unit A, 3 presses.**
2. Recipe for **button 4, unit B, 3 presses.**

{% hint style="info" %}
Do the **whole recipe** for each unit, including the controller's pairing button. Do not try to go from one unit to the next without finishing.
{% endhint %}

#### Pairing 5: the wired button

The RFSAI-61B-SL has an **external button input**. A wired button or switch connected there is paired **exactly like a wireless one**.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**The external-button input is at mains potential.** Switch off the circuit. Wire the button as a mains device, and have it done by a qualified person.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Unit A into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on unit A for **2 s**. The LED flashes once per second.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press the wired button 4 times

Press the wired wall button **4 times, about 1 s apart**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on unit A.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

This works on the RFSAI-61B-SL, RFSAI-62B-SL and RFSAI-61BPF-SL. On the **RFSAI-11B-SL** the external button has a fixed ON/OFF function and is not paired.

## 4. Test

| Press                                      | Result          |
| ------------------------------------------ | --------------- |
| Button 1                                   | Light A toggles |
| Button 2                                   | Light B toggles |
| Wired button                               | Light A toggles |
| Switch both lights on, then press button 4 | **Both** go off |
| Press button 4 again | They stay off |

## If it did not work

| What you see                                                       | Cause                              | Fix                                                                                                                           |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Button 4 switches off only one light | You paired only one unit | Do the recipe again for the other unit |
| A button toggles the wrong light | Wrong unit was in programming mode | Clear that button on the wrong unit ([Tutorial 7](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-7-fixing-mistakes.md)), then pair again |
| Button 4 toggles instead of switching off | 4 presses instead of 3 | Clear it on that unit and pair again with 3 presses |
| Wired button does nothing | Not wired, or input not paired | Check the wiring first. Then repeat pairing 5 |
| Nothing happens when you press the wired button during programming | The unit is an RFSAI-11B-SL | Its external button is fixed. Wire it correctly; there is nothing to pair |
| A new button will not pair | The unit's memory is full | Clear buttons you do not use |
| LED flashes 4× per second | PROG held too long | Release and start again |

## What you learned

* One controller can have a different job on every button.
* One button can control **many units**: pair it to each unit.
* A wired button on an RFSAI is paired like a wireless one.
* The central OFF is simply a 3× pairing repeated on every unit.

## Try this before moving on

1. Add a third unit and pair button 4 to it as 3×. One press now switches off three lights.
2. Pair button 3 as **2×** (switch on) to both units: a central ON.
3. With a two-channel **RFSAI-62B-SL**, pair button 1 to output 1 and button 2 to output 2 ([RFSAI page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md)).
