## What you will build

Three small systems. You can do them one at a time.

|   | Detector                          | Switch unit does                                  | You will learn                           |
| - | --------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| A | **RFMD-100** motion detector | Light on when someone moves, off after a set time | DIP switches, delayed return with a time |
| B | **RFWD-100** window/door detector | Light on while a door is open                     | The magnet, ON/OFF function              |
| C | **RFSF-100** flood detector | Output switches when water is found | Pairing by counting battery insertions |

A detector is a **transmitter**. It is paired like a controller, but you pair it by **inserting its batteries**.

## You need

* A switch unit that is already wired and working: **RFSAI-61B-SL** ([unit page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md)). It must be marked **RFIO2**: detectors work only with RFIO2 units ([Appendix C](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-c-which-transmitter-works-with-which-receiver.md)).
* The detector, with its battery or batteries.
* A small screwdriver to open the detector cover.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**PROG time.** On the **RFSAI-61B-SL**, hold PROG for **2 s**. On another unit, hold PROG until the LED flashes once per second, or look up its *enter programming* time in [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md).
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
If you have just removed the batteries, **wait 30 s** before inserting them again. Leave **1 s** between commands.
{% endhint %}

## A. Motion light with the RFMD-100

#### Choose the settings

Open the detector cover with a screwdriver. The DIP switches, the batteries and two small adjusters (**SENS** and **LUX**) are inside.

![DIP switch location](https://2503278529-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FkoLW6hWCvDgagoswDVfD%2Fuploads%2Fe1vMciTW8bxmfoL53mH3%2Frfmd-100-dip-location.png?alt=media)

| Switch    | OFF                                                       | ON                                                                                                      |
| --------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **DIP 1** | Normal motion (PIR) function | Light-sensor function: it sends the command when the light is lower than the **LUX** setting (0–500 lx) |
| **DIP 2** | After an activation the detector is idle for **1 minute** | Idle for **5 minutes** |
| **DIP 3** | Paired with a **unit** (this tutorial)                    | Connected to a **gateway** ([Tutorial 9](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-9-adding-a-gateway.md))    |

For a normal motion light set **DIP 1 OFF**, **DIP 3 OFF**. The **SENS** adjuster sets how sensitive the motion sensor is. You can change SENS and LUX at any time.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Set the DIP switches before you insert the batteries.** Inserting the batteries saves them. A change to the DIP switches has to be saved by inserting the batteries again.
{% endhint %}

#### Pair it, with a delay time

This is the **delayed return with time setting**: the light switches on when the detector sees motion, and off by itself after the time you choose (2 s to 60 min).

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the unit for its *enter programming* time (**2 s** on an RFSAI-61B-SL). The LED flashes once per second.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Insert the batteries

Insert the batteries into the detector (check the polarity). The **red LED on the detector blinks**, and the **unit's LED blinks faster**: the detector is assigned.

![Insert the batteries](https://2503278529-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FkoLW6hWCvDgagoswDVfD%2Fuploads%2FUGkKH1E4DHQuz7j3zJn5%2Frfmd-100-battery-insert.png?alt=media)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Remove one battery, wait 30 s, insert it

Take one battery out. After **30 s** put it back. The detector's red LED blinks and the unit's LED blinks faster again.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Remove it again, wait 30 s, start the timer

Take the battery out again. After **30 s** hold **PROG** on the unit for **more than 5 s**. The LED flashes **twice per second**: timing mode. **The time starts counting when you release PROG.**
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Wait for the time you want

Wait for the delay you want, between 2 s and 60 min. For a test, 10 s is enough.

![Wait](https://2503278529-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FkoLW6hWCvDgagoswDVfD%2Fuploads%2FqKphDjGCDsV2R207DrBN%2Ftiming-wait.png?alt=media)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Insert the battery to store the time

Insert the battery into the detector. The red LED blinks. The time is stored and the unit's LED blinks.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the unit (under 1 s). The LED goes out.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

There is also a **fixed-time** version, which is shorter: do steps 1, 2 and 7 only. The RFMD-100 manual says the output then opens after 1 s. For a light that stays on for a while, use the version with a time setting above.

#### A3. Test

1. Close the cover. After you insert batteries the detector needs **15 s** to settle before it detects motion.
2. For the **first 5 minutes after the cover is closed**, each detection blinks the red LED and the idle time is cut to 2 s. Use this to walk-test.
3. Walk in front of the detector. The light switches on. After your time it switches off.

Mount it up to **2.5 m** high, indoors. The detection angle is **110°**, up to **9.5 m**.

## B. Door or window with the RFWD-100

The RFWD-100 has two parts: a **detector** and a **magnetic module**. It activates when the magnet and the detector become **separated**. Put the detector on the moving part, the magnet on the frame.

#### B1. DIP switches

| Switch    | OFF                                                           | ON                                             |
| --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **DIP 1** | Normal: **activates when the magnet moves away** (door opens) | Inverse: activates when the magnet comes close |
| **DIP 2** | Paired with a **unit** (this tutorial)                        | Connected to a **gateway**                     |

Set them with a screwdriver. Saving is the same as for the RFMD-100: the DIP is saved when the battery goes in.

#### B2. Pair it

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the unit for its *enter programming* time (**2 s** on an RFSAI-61B-SL). The LED flashes once per second.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Insert the battery

Insert the CR2032 battery into the detector (check the polarity). The **red LED blinks**. The unit's LED blinks faster: the detector is assigned.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the unit. The LED goes out.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

The output **switches on when the door opens** and **off when it closes**: a cellar or garage light. For a light that stays on a while after the door closes, use the delayed return: pair the same way and follow steps 3 to 6 of section A2, with the CR2032 battery.

#### B3. Test

For **5 minutes after you insert the battery** each approach or separation of the magnet blinks the red LED. Test the position **before** you stick the parts down: the detector and magnet must be close enough when the door is closed. The light must follow the door.

It works with the units marked RFIO2 listed in [Appendix C](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-c-which-transmitter-works-with-which-receiver.md). It cannot control shutter units.

## C. Flood with the RFSF-100

When water bridges the two contacts on its underside, the RFSF-100 sends a command at once. It sounds an alarm and flashes. Use it to switch a pump, a warning device or a valve.

#### C1. Open it and set it

1. Open the cover with a screwdriver. Remove the insulating foil. The **blue LED** lights for 2 s and a message is sent.
2. Set the DIP switches:

| Switch    | OFF                                                              | ON                                                                                    |
| --------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **DIP 1** | **Normal**: when flooded, the paired unit's contact **switches** | **Negated**: when flooded, the contact **opens**. When the flood ends it closes again |
| **DIP 2** | For a **switch unit** (no periodic status message) | For a **gateway** (status every 120 min and on change) |
| **DIP 3** | Sound **off** | Sound **on** when the contacts are flooded |

3. Insert the batteries. The blue LED lights for **2 s**: the DIP settings are saved. If it does not light, remove the batteries, press the inner sides of the battery holders together lightly, then insert them again.

#### C2. Pair it

This detector is paired by **counting battery insertions**. One insertion is one press.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Remove one battery

Take one battery out of its holder.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the unit for its *enter programming* time (**2 s** on an RFSAI-61B-SL). The LED flashes once per second.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Insert and remove the battery

Insert and remove the battery **once for function 1**, twice for function 2, and so on. Each insertion must make the **blue LED** flash. Leave **1 s** between insertions.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the unit. Put the battery back, refit the seal and the cover, and tighten the screws.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**Choosing the function.** The number of insertions is the function number, in the same way as the number of button presses. Choose the function that gives the behaviour you want from the output, using the function list for your unit in [Appendix B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-b-functions-by-number-of-presses.md). For example, pair a **switch-on** function to switch a pump or warning device on when water is found, and use **DIP 1** (negated) for a valve that closes when its power is removed.
{% endhint %}

#### C3. Test and place

* Put a few drops of **tap water** across the two contacts. The detector signals: the LED flashes once per second, alternating with a beep. The unit switches. A few seconds after the water is gone, the alarm ends and the unit is told.
* Place the detector on a **flat, non-conductive surface** where flooding is expected, in a **visible** place. It senses only a liquid that has reached the contacts. Indoors only.
* Suitable liquids include drinking, well, rain, waste and sea water. Not suitable: demineralised or deionised water, petrol, oil, paint, and drinks with a high alcohol content.
* Weak battery: the alarm shows 2 flashes and 2 beeps. Without an alarm the detector flashes once, then four times, and repeats every 15 minutes.

{% hint style="info" %}
For a valve that **closes when its power is removed**, set **DIP 1 ON** (negated). The unit then opens its contact when water is found.
{% endhint %}

## What you learned

* A detector is a transmitter. You pair it by inserting its batteries, while the unit waits in programming mode.
* DIP switches choose the behaviour. Set them **before** the batteries go in.
* **30 s** pauses and **1 s** gaps matter.
* The delay time is measured: PROG held more than 5 s starts it, the battery insertion ends it.
* Detectors need units marked **RFIO2**.

## Try this before moving on

1. On the RFMD-100 set DIP 2 ON for a 5-minute idle time and watch the difference.
2. Pair a wall button to the same unit as in Tutorial 1. The light is then switched by the detector **and** by the button.
3. With the RFMD-100, turn **SENS** until it triggers only for a person walking up to it.
