# Tutorial 4: blinds and shutters

Wire an RFJA-32B-SL shutter unit, pair a rocker as up and down, teach the unit how long the blind takes to travel, and test it.

*Part 2 — Tutorials. Do* [*Tutorial 1*](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md) *first. The same steps are in the* [*Pairing reference, section E*](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md)*.*

## What you will build

A roller blind (or shutter) that moves up and down from one wireless rocker.

|   | Behaviour                                                   | You will learn                                              |
| - | ----------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | Press the up button: the blind goes up | A shutter unit pairs a **rocker**, not a press count |
| 2 | Press the down button: it goes down | The second half becomes "down" by itself |
| 3 | A short press tilts the slats, a long press goes to the end | **Travel time**: the unit measures how long the blind needs |

## You need

* **RFJA-32B-SL** switch unit for shutters ([product page](https://www.elkoep.com/switch-unit-for-shutters-rfja-32b-sl))
* A controller with a **rocker** (two halves), for example an **RFWB-20/MPW** wall controller
* A blind or shutter motor **with end-position switches** (the unit uses them to find the ends)
* Wiring, a small screwdriver

{% hint style="info" %}
A shutter unit is different from a light switch unit. You do **not** count presses. The first button you press becomes **up**. The other half of the same rocker becomes **down** automatically. Then the unit **measures the travel time**.
{% endhint %}

## 1. Wire the unit

{% hint style="danger" %}
Switch the circuit off before wiring. Installation must be carried out by a qualified person. Follow the wiring diagram in the unit's [instruction manual](https://www.elkoep.com/switch-unit-for-shutters-rfja-32b-sl) for your motor.
{% endhint %}

The unit has two switching outputs (each is rated 8 A / AC1, 2000 VA). The parts on the unit are:

| No. | Part                                    | What it is                                                            |
| --- | --------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | LED and **PROG** button | Programming, manual control and status |
| 2 | Addresses | One for each output. Used to add the unit to a gateway |
| 3 | Terminal block for **external buttons** | One for "up", one for "down". Existing wired buttons can be connected |
| 4   | **N**                                   | Neutral conductor                                                     |
| 5   | Load terminals                          | Connect the motor here                                                |
| 6   | **L**                                   | Phase conductor                                                       |

* Fit the unit in an installation box, a ceiling or a non-conductive housing of the drive. **Keep it away from metal.**
* Keep at least **1 cm** from other units.
* Switch the circuit on.

## 2. Check the unit moves the blind

Short press **PROG** (under 1 s). The blind moves. Press again and again; the blind goes into its end position. Short presses of PROG are the unit's manual control.

If nothing moves, check the supply and the motor wiring. Pairing cannot fix wiring.

## 3. Pair the rocker and teach the travel time

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Move the blind to the top

Short press **PROG** (under 1 s) several times until the blind is at its **upper end position**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** until the LED flashes **once per second**, then release.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Do not hold PROG for too long: holding it for 5 s starts clearing a button.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press one rocker button — this becomes "up"

Press **one button of the controller**. This button becomes **up**. The other half of the same rocker becomes **down** automatically. The unit's LED lights at the press.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Timing mode

Hold **PROG** for **more than 5 s**. The LED flashes **twice per second**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Teach "down"

Press and hold **down**. The blind moves to its lower end. Release **2 s after** the blind has stopped at the lower end switch.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Teach "up"

Press and hold **up**. The blind moves to its upper end. Release **2 s after** the blind has stopped at the upper end switch. The unit stores the travel time (it can be 1 s to 4 min, plus the 2 s).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** (under 1 s). The **LED switches off**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## 4. Test

| What you do | What the blind does |
| ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| **Short press** of up (under 3 s) | A short move up, for tilting the slats |
| **Short press** of down (under 3 s) | A short move down, for tilting the slats |
| **Long press** of up (over 3 s) | The blind goes all the way up |
| **Long press** of down (over 3 s) | The blind goes all the way down |

## If it did not work

| What you see                           | Cause                                                                | Fix                                                                                                                                             |
| -------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| LED does not flash once per second | PROG released too early | Keep PROG held until the LED flashes once per second |
| LED flashes 4× per second | PROG held too long: clear mode | Release, wait, start step 2 again |
| The blind stops short, or goes too far | Travel time taught wrongly (button released too early or late) | Clear the button and repeat steps 1 to 7. Release exactly 2 s after the blind stops |
| Up and down are the wrong way round | The first button you pressed in step 3 is "up" | Clear the button and pair again. Press the other half first. Also check the motor wiring |
| Nothing reacts to the controller | Controller not in pairing mode, flat battery, or an older controller | Do **Tutorial 1** section 3, step 1. Older controllers: [Pairing reference, section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md) |
| No reaction at all | Metal around the unit, or too far | See [Tutorial 8](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-8-range-and-repeaters.md) |

## Clearing a shutter button

The same idea as on other units ([Tutorial 7](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-7-fixing-mistakes.md)). From the RFJA-32B-SL manual:

| To | Hold PROG for | The LED does |
| -------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Clear **one** button | **5 s**. Then press the controller button | Flashes 4× per second. It goes out when the button is removed |
| Clear the **whole memory** | **8 s** | Flashes 4× per second, then every 0.5 s (up to 4 min). Short press PROG to leave |

## What you learned

* A shutter unit pairs one **half of a rocker** as up and the other half as down.
* The unit **measures the travel time** in timing mode: PROG held for more than 5 s.
* Release each button **2 s after** the blind stops.
* Short presses tilt the slats, long presses go to the end.

## Try this before moving on

1. Pair a second rocker to the same unit. Each unit can take up to 25 buttons.
2. Pair the same rocker to a second RFJA to move two blinds together.
3. Clear the rocker and teach the travel time again.
