## What you will build

A dimmable light that you switch and dim with a wall button, and switch off with another.

|   | Behaviour                                     | You will learn                       |
| - | --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| 1 | Button 1: short press on/off, long press dims | **Light scene 1** (1×)               |
| 2 | Button 2 always switches the light off        | **Switch off** (8×)                  |
| 3 | Button 3 brightens the light slowly           | **Sunrise** (5×) with a time setting |

## You need

* **RFDEL-71B-SL** universal dimmer ([product page and manual](https://www.elkoep.com/universal-dimmer-rfdel-71b-sl))
* **RFWB-40/MPW** wall controller (4 buttons), or any controller with a pairing button
* A **dimmable** light: ordinary or halogen bulbs, a halogen with a transformer, or a lamp marked **dimmable** (LED 230 V, energy-saving)
* Wiring, a small screwdriver

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Use only dimmable lamps.** Energy-saving bulbs that are not marked as dimmable cannot be dimmed. Do not mix different kinds of light source on one dimmer. The maximum load is **300 W** at power factor 1 for this dimmer, and less for LED and energy-saving lamps. See [Appendix D](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-d-load-capacity.md).
{% endhint %}

## 1. Wire the unit

{% hint style="danger" %}
Switch the circuit off before wiring. Installation must be carried out by a qualified person.
{% endhint %}

The RFDEL-71B-SL is a **4-wire** dimmer: it needs **phase (L)** and **neutral (N)**. Connect the supply and the light as shown in the wiring diagram of the unit's manual. There are three drawings, for the three load types: coil transformer, electronic transformer, and ordinary, LED and energy-saving lamps.

* The unit has a terminal **S** for an existing wired button.
* Fit it in the installation box, ceiling or light cover. **Keep it away from metal.** Keep **1 cm** between units.
* Switch the circuit on.

## 2. Check the unit works

Short press **PROG** (under 1 s). The light switches on. Press again: it switches off.

If nothing happens, check the supply first.

## 3. Pair button 1 as light scene 1

{% hint style="warning" %}
**PROG time.** The time to hold PROG differs between units. On the dimmer, hold PROG until the LED flashes **once per second**, then release. Other times for your unit are in [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md).
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Controller into pairing mode

Remove the RFWB-40/MPW flap to reach the pairing button. Hold it for **1 s**. The red LED gives a short blink.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Dimmer into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the dimmer until the LED flashes **once per second**, then release.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press button 1 once

Press **button 1** **1 time**. The dimmer's LED lights at the press. One press = **light scene 1**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the dimmer (under 1 s). The LED lights according to the memory-function setting. Then short press the pairing button on the controller and refit the flap.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

#### Try it

* **Short press** (under 0.5 s): the light switches on, or off, at the brightness it remembers.
* **Long press** (over 0.5 s): the brightness changes smoothly. Release at the level you like. The dimmer **stores it** and keeps it even after the power is switched off.

## 4. Pair button 2 as switch off

Repeat section 3, but in step 3 press **button 2** **8 times**, about **1 s apart**. Now button 2 always switches the light off.

## 5. Pair button 3 as sunrise

Sunrise brightens the light slowly over a time you set (2 s to 30 min). Sunset (6×) dims it slowly the same way.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Prepare

Put the controller into pairing mode, then the dimmer into programming mode (section 3, steps 1 and 2).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press button 3 five times

Press **button 3** **5 times**, **1 s apart**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Timing mode

Hold **PROG** on the dimmer for **more than 5 s**. The LED flashes **twice per second**. **The time starts counting when you release PROG.**
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Wait the time you want

Wait for the time the light should take to go from dark to full brightness (2 s to 30 min). For a test, 10 s is enough.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press button 3 once

Press the **same button once**. The time is stored.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** (under 1 s), then the controller's pairing button.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## 6. Set the load type and minimum brightness

Do this if the light flickers at low brightness, or if it does not dim over the whole range. It uses a controller that is **already paired** (section 3).

{% hint style="warning" %}
A wrong load type can make the dimmer overheat. Do not dim energy-saving bulbs that are not marked dimmable, and do not mix kinds of light source.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Enter SETUP mode

Press **PROG** quickly **4 times**, each press under 1 s. The light now changes **automatically** between 0 % and 100 %.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Read the load type from the LED

The LED shows the current type: **four flashes = R, C mode**; **double flash = L mode**.

| Mode     | For                                                                            |
| -------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **R, C** | Ordinary bulbs, halogen lamps, electronic transformers for low-voltage halogen |
| **L**    | Coil (wound) transformers for low-voltage halogen                              |

To change the mode, press a button on **any controller already paired** with the dimmer.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Minimum brightness

Short press **PROG**. The LED flashes **once per second**, like in programming mode. Set the minimum brightness with a paired button.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Save

Short press **PROG** again. The load type and minimum brightness are stored. SETUP mode ends.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
For LED and energy-saving lamps, choose the mode shown for your kind of lamp in the connection drawings of the dimmer's [instruction manual](https://www.elkoep.com/universal-dimmer-rfdel-71b-sl).
{% endhint %}

## 7. Test

| Press           | Result                                           |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Button 1, short | Light on or off at the stored brightness |
| Button 1, long | The light dims or brightens. Release to store |
| Button 2        | Light off                                        |
| Button 3 | The light brightens slowly over the time you set |

## All the light scenes

The number of presses chooses the function. This is the dimmer table from [Appendix B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-b-functions-by-number-of-presses.md).

| Presses | Function | What the light does |
| ------- | ------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1× | Light scene 1 | Short press: on/off at the stored brightness. Long press: adjust. Kept after a power cut |
| 2× | Light scene 2 | Short press: on/off at the stored brightness. Hold **more than 3 s**: adjust. Kept after a power cut |
| 3× | Light scene 3 | Short press: on/off at the stored brightness. Long press: adjust. Kept after a power cut |
| 4× | Light scene 4 | Short press: on/off at the stored brightness. Long press: adjust. Kept after a power cut |
| 5×      | Sunrise       | A press brightens the light gradually over the set time (2 s – 30 min)                               |
| 6×      | Sunset        | A press dims the light gradually over the set time (2 s – 30 min)                                    |
| 7×      | On / off      | A press switches on if off, off if on                                                                |
| 8×      | Switch off    | A press switches the light off                                                                       |

{% hint style="info" %}
Scene 2 is made for places where you do not want to dim by accident: the light only dims when you hold the button for more than 3 s.
{% endhint %}

## If it did not work

| What you see                           | Cause                                                     | Fix                                                                                                      |
| -------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| LED never flashes once per second | PROG released too early | Keep PROG held until the LED flashes once per second |
| LED flashes 4× per second | PROG held too long: clear mode | Release, wait, start again |
| The light does not dim | The lamp is not dimmable | Use a dimmable lamp. Check the load type (section 6) |
| The light flickers at low brightness | Minimum brightness too low | Raise the minimum brightness (section 6) |
| Button switches off instead of dimming | Wrong number of presses | Clear the button ([Tutorial 7](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-7-fixing-mistakes.md)) and pair again |
| Button does something else | Presses too fast | Leave **1 s** between presses |
| Sunrise takes the wrong time | Timing started or ended at the wrong moment | Time starts when you release PROG and ends when you press the button once |
| Controller does nothing | Not in pairing mode, flat battery, or an older controller | [Pairing reference, section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md) |

## What you learned

* Dimmers have **8 functions**, not 6: scenes 1–4, sunrise, sunset, on/off, off.
* A **long press** sets and stores the brightness. A short press switches at that brightness.
* Sunrise and sunset need a time. You set it with PROG (over 5 s) and one press.
* A load-type setting (SETUP mode) makes the dimmer fit your lamps.

## Try this before moving on

1. Pair a second button as **scene 2 (2×)**. Notice that you must **hold** it for more than 3 s to dim.
2. Pair a button as **sunset (6×)** and use it as a "good night" button.
3. Connect an existing wired button to terminal **S**. It is paired like a wireless button ([Tutorial 6](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-6-several-buttons-a-wired-button-and-a-central-off.md)).
