# Tutorial 2: staircase light

Make a light that switches off by itself: pair a button with delayed off (5×), set the time, and choose what happens after a power cut.

*Part 2 — Tutorials. Do* [*Tutorial 1*](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md) *first. This tutorial uses the same unit.*

## What you will build

A staircase or hall light. One press switches it on. It switches itself off after a time you choose.

|   | Behaviour                                          | You will learn                       |
| - | -------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| 1 | One press: light on. After the set time: light off | **Delayed off** (5×) |
| 2 | You choose the time, from 2 s to 60 min | **Setting the time** by measuring it |
| 3 | After a power cut the unit behaves as you decide | The **memory function** |

## You need

* **RFSAI-61B-SL** switch unit, wired and working as in [Tutorial 1](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-1-your-first-button-and-light.md) ([unit page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md))
* **RFWB-40/MPW** wall controller, or any controller with a pairing button
* A clock or a watch with seconds

{% hint style="info" %}
If your light was paired in Tutorial 1, you can use the same unit. Use a **different button** for the staircase function, so the other buttons keep working.
{% endhint %}

## 1. Check the unit works

The unit must be wired as in Tutorial 1. A short press of **PROG** (under 1 s) must switch the light on and off. If not, fix the wiring first.

## 2. Pair a button with delayed off and set the time

The time is set by **measuring it**: you wait for the time you want, and press the button once at the end.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**PROG times are different on different units.** The times below are for the **RFSAI-61B-SL** (and RFSAI-11B-SL, RFSAI-61BPF-SL). For any other unit, look up *enter programming* in [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md) first. The two-channel RFSAI-62B-SL needs **3–5 s**, after you choose the output with PROG 1–3 s (green LED = output 1, red = output 2).
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Controller into pairing mode

Remove the RFWB-40/MPW flap and hold the pairing button for **1 s**. The red LED gives a short blink.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the RFSAI-61B-SL for **2 s**, then release. The LED flashes **once per second**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press the button five times

Press the button you want to use **5 times, about 1 s apart**. The unit's LED lights at each press.

Five presses = **delayed off**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Timing mode

Now hold **PROG** for **more than 5 s**. The LED flashes **twice per second**: the unit is ready to measure the time. **The time starts counting when you release PROG.**

{% hint style="danger" %}
Do this **only after the five presses**. If you hold PROG for 5 s from normal operation, the unit starts clearing a button (LED flashes 4× per second). If that happens, release, wait until the LED is back to normal, and start again from step 1.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Wait for the time you want

Wait for as long as the light should stay on: anywhere from **2 s to 60 min**. For the first test, wait **10 s**. For a real staircase, 1 or 2 minutes is a common choice.

![](https://2503278529-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FkoLW6hWCvDgagoswDVfD%2Fuploads%2FqKphDjGCDsV2R207DrBN%2Ftiming-wait.png?alt=media)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press the same button once

Press **the same controller button once**. The time is stored.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the unit (under 1 s). Then short press the pairing button on the controller and refit the flap.

The unit's LED now shows the **memory function** (section 4): **3 blinks** = on, **one long light** = off.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## 3. Test

Press the button once. The light switches **on**. After the time you set, it switches **off by itself**. Time it with your watch.

To change the time later, **clear the button** ([Tutorial 7](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-7-fixing-mistakes.md)) and do section 2 again with the new time.

## 4. The memory function

The memory function decides what the light does **after a power cut**.

| Setting                            | After a power cut                                                                    |
| ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **On**, buttons paired as 1×–4× | The output returns to the state it was in (the unit saves it 15 s after each change) |
| **On**, buttons paired as 5× or 6× | The output goes to the state it **would have had at the end of the delay** |
| **Off** | The output stays **off** |

For a staircase button (5×) this means: after a power cut the light does **not** come back on, because at the end of the delay it would be off. If the same unit also has a normal toggle button (4×), the memory setting changes what *that* button does after a power cut.

#### Change the memory function

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Programming mode

Hold **PROG** for **2 s** (RFSAI-61B-SL). The LED flashes once per second.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Short press PROG

Short press **PROG** (under 1 s). This **reverses** the setting and leaves programming mode.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Read the LED

**3 blinks** = memory function **on**. **One long light** = **off**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Clearing buttons or the whole memory does **not** change the memory function.
{% endhint %}

## If it did not work

| What you see                                          | Cause                                                                              | Fix                                                                                                                                                            |
| ----------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| LED never flashes once per second | PROG released too early | Hold for the full 2 s |
| LED flashes 4× per second | PROG held 5 s or more before timing mode: clear mode | Release, wait, start again from step 1 |
| The LED does not flash twice per second | PROG not held long enough after the five presses | Hold for **more than 5 s**, after the five presses |
| The light does not switch off by itself | The button was paired with the wrong number of presses, or the time was not stored | Clear the button ([Tutorial 7](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-7-fixing-mistakes.md)) and pair again. End the timing with **one press of the same button** |
| The light switches off too soon or too late | Timing started or stopped at the wrong moment | The time **starts when PROG is released** and **ends when you press the button once** |
| The button toggles instead of switching off by itself | 4 presses instead of 5 | Clear the button and pair again, 1 s between presses |
| Nothing reacts to the controller | Not in pairing mode, flat battery, or an older controller | Repeat step 1. Older controllers: [Pairing reference, section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md) |

## What you learned

* Five presses give **delayed off**. Six give **delayed on** ([Appendix B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-b-functions-by-number-of-presses.md)).
* The time is **measured**: PROG over 5 s starts it, one press of the same button ends it. It can be 2 s to 60 min.
* PROG over 5 s only means "timing" **after** the presses. From normal operation, 5 s is "clear" on this unit.
* The memory function is set by one short press of PROG at the end of programming.

## Try this before moving on

1. Pair a **second** button as 5× with a different time. Each button has its own time.
2. Pair the **wired** staircase button on the landing as 5×, in the same way. The external button input is paired like a wireless button ([Tutorial 6](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-6-several-buttons-a-wired-button-and-a-central-off.md)).
3. Try **6× (delayed on)**: pressing the button switches the light off, and it comes on by itself after the time.
