# Tutorial 1: your first button and light

Wire an RFSAI-61B-SL, pair one button of a wall controller to it, and switch a light on and off.

*Part 2 — Tutorials. Read* [*How programming works*](/inels-home/inels-wireless/how-programming-works.md) *first.*

## What you will build

A ceiling light switched by one button of a wireless wall controller.

|   | Behaviour                       | You will learn                       |
| - | ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| 1 | Button 1 toggles the light      | Pairing, function 4× (impulse relay) |
| 2 | Button 2 always switches it off | A second button on the same unit |

## You need

* **RFSAI-61B-SL** switch unit ([unit page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md))
* **RFWB-40/MPW** wall controller ([page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/controllers/wireless-wall-controllers/rfwb-40-mpw.md)) — or any controller with a pairing button
* A light, wiring, a small screwdriver

## 1. Wire the unit

{% hint style="danger" %}
Switch the circuit off before wiring. Installation must be carried out by a qualified person.
{% endhint %}

1. Connect **L** (phase) and **N** (neutral) to the RFSAI-61B-SL supply terminals.
2. Connect the light to the **output** terminal.
3. Fit the unit in the installation box, ceiling or light cover. Keep it away from metal.
4. Switch the circuit on.

Terminal layout: [RFSAI-xxB-SL — wiring](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md).

## 2. Check the unit works

Short press **PROG** on the unit (under 1 s). The light switches on. Press again — it switches off.

If nothing happens, check the supply before you go further. Pairing cannot fix wiring.

## 3. Pair button 1

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Controller into pairing mode

Remove the RFWB-40/MPW flap to reach the pairing button. Hold it for **1 s** — the red LED gives a short blink.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Unit into programming mode

Hold **PROG** on the RFSAI-61B-SL for **2 s**, then release. The LED flashes **once per second**.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Do **not** hold for 5 s. On this unit, 5 s starts *clearing* a button (LED flashes 4× per second). If that happens, release, wait until the LED is back to normal and start this step again.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Press button 1 four times

Press **button 1** on the controller **4 times, about 1 second apart**. The unit's LED blinks at each press.

Four presses = impulse relay: each press toggles the light.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Finish

Short press **PROG** on the unit (under 1 s). Then short press the pairing button on the controller and refit the flap.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## 4. Test

Press button 1: the light switches on. Press again: off. Done — that is the whole system in one button.

## 5. Add an OFF button

Repeat section 3, but in step 3 press **button 2** **3 times** (switch off). Now button 1 toggles and button 2 always switches off — handy by the door.

## If it did not work

| What you see                              | Cause                                                                | Fix                                                                                                                       |
| ----------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| LED never flashes once per second | PROG released too early | Hold for the full 2 s |
| LED flashes 4× per second | PROG held too long — clear mode | Release, wait, start step 2 again |
| Button does something else (e.g. on only) | Presses too fast or miscounted | Clear the button ([Pairing reference — Clearing](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md)) and pair again |
| No reaction at all to the controller | Controller not in pairing mode, flat battery, or an older controller | Repeat step 1; older controllers: [Pairing reference, section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md) |

## What you learned

* Controller into pairing first, then the unit.
* The unit's PROG hold time comes from [Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md) — here 2 s.
* The number of presses picks the function — [Appendix B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-b-functions-by-number-of-presses.md).
* One unit can take many buttons, each with its own function.

## Try this before moving on

1. Pair the same button 1 to a second unit. One press now switches both.
2. Turn on the **memory function** so the light comes back in its last state after a power cut ([RFSAI page — Memory function](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md)).
3. Clear button 2 and pair it again as **2×** (switch on).
