# Transmitters

Everything that sends a command in iNELS Wireless — buttons, controllers, key fobs, detectors, input modules and sensors.

*Part 3 — Unit reference.*

A **transmitter** sends a command when something happens: a button is pressed, motion is detected, a window opens, a contact closes, a sensor reads a value. It does not switch anything itself — a [receiver](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/receivers.md) does that. You connect the two by [**pairing**](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md).

## What every transmitter has in common

* It is **battery powered** (or a small supply for input modules) and needs **no wiring to the load**.
* It remembers **nothing about what it controls** — the memory is in the receiver.
* One transmitter button can be paired to **many receivers**.
* To pair it, put the transmitter into pairing mode first, then the receiver.
