# Appendix D: Load capacity

What each iNELS Wireless switch unit and dimmer can switch: current, power, lamp counts, and what the load categories mean.

*Appendices. Use it before you wire a unit to a load.*

This appendix gives the main load ratings of the switch units and dimmers. For the full list of load categories of a unit, see its datasheet, which is linked on the unit's page under Downloads.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Read this first.** The lamp numbers below are results of ELKO EP's own tests and are **for information only**. Real results depend on the wiring, the cable length and the light source. **Do not connect inductive and capacitive loads at the same time.** A dimmer's real load depends on the power factor (cos φ) of the lamp: see section 4.

## 1. Switch units (relays)

There are two groups of relay contacts. Both are made of **AgSnO₂**, a material that suits loads with an inductive part (such as light ballasts) and short surges of current.

| Group        | Contact      | Units                                                                                                                          |
| ------------ | ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **A — 8 A**  | AgSnO₂, 8 A  | RFJA-32B-SL, RFSA-62B-SL, RFSAI-62B-SL, RFSAI-62B-SL/TH, RFSA-66M, RFSAI-11B-SL, RFSAI-61B-SL, RFSW-62, RFSW-262, RFSTI-11B-SL |
| **B — 16 A** | AgSnO₂, 16 A | RFSA-61M, RFSA-61MI, RFSA-61B, RFSC-61N, RFUS-61 (for the RFUS-61 see AC-1 below)                                              |

#### What the unit can switch, in plain words

| You want to switch                                    | Group A (8 A contact) | Group B (16 A contact)                       |
| ----------------------------------------------------- | --------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| A resistive load (heater, plain lamp) — category AC-1 | **250 V / 8 A**       | **250 V / 16 A** (RFUS-61: **250 V / 12 A**) |

For lamps (incandescent, halogen, fluorescent), motors, transformers and DC loads, see the datasheet of your unit — for example the [RFSA-61M / RFSA-61MI datasheet](https://www.elkoep.com/media/import/Elko/RFx/RFSA-61M/EN/Datasheet_RFSA-61Mx.pdf) — or open the unit's page in [Switch units](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units.md) and use the datasheet link under Downloads.

{% hint style="info" %}
The [RFSAI-xxB-SL unit page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/switch-units/rfsai-xxb-sl.md) gives the basic rating: 8 A / AC-1, 2000 VA / AC-1, peak 10 A for less than 3 s. For the RFSAI-62B-SL, both outputs together may carry 8 A.
{% endhint %}

## 2. What the categories mean

Load ratings are given in "categories of use". In plain words:

| Category | What it is for |
| ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **AC-1** | Loads with almost no coil in them, such as resistive heating (power factor 0.95 or better) |
| **AC-5b** | Switching incandescent bulbs. A cold filament draws much more current than a hot one, so this rating is lower than AC-1 |
| **AC-6a**         | Switching transformers                                                                                                  |
| **AC-7b**         | Motors in household appliances                                                                                          |
| **AC-12 / AC-13** | Semiconductor loads with separating transformers                                                                        |
| **AC-14**         | Small electromagnetic loads (up to 72 VA)                                                                               |
| **AC-15** | Larger electromagnetic loads (over 72 VA), such as contactor coils |
| **DC-1**          | Resistive loads on DC                                                                                                   |
| **DC-3 / DC-5**   | Shunt motors and series motors on DC                                                                                    |
| **DC-12**         | Resistive loads and solid-state loads on DC                                                                             |
| **DC-13**         | Electromagnets on DC                                                                                                    |
| **DC-14**         | Electromagnetic loads on DC with a limiting resistor                                                                    |

#### How many lamps (ELKO EP test results)

The table shows how many of each tested lamp a dimmer can carry. A dash means the combination was not tested for that dimmer.

For the lamp numbers of the RFDSC-71N see its [datasheet](https://www.elkoep.com/media/import/Elko/RFx/RFDSC-71N/EN/Datasheet_RFDSC-71N.pdf).

#### LED strips and RGB strips

The RFDA-73M/RGB is tested with strips. The values are lengths of strip, not numbers of lamps.

| Dimmer           | LED strip 7.2 W | RGB strip 14.4 W |
| ---------------- | --------------- | ---------------- |
| **RFDA-73M/RGB** | 3 × 8 m         | 10 m             |

For other strips see the [RFDA-73M/RGB datasheet](https://www.elkoep.com/media/import/Elko/RFx/RFDA-73M/EN/Datasheet_RFDA-73M_RGB.pdf) and the [RFDA-73M/RGB page](/inels-home/inels-wireless/devices/receivers/dimmers/rfda-73m-rgb.md).

## 4. Power factor and dimmable lamps

For all dimmer loads:

* The maximum load depends on the inner construction of the dimmable LED and ESL lamp and on its **power factor cos φ**.
* The dimmer's load capacity is given for cos φ = 1. The power factor of dimmable LED and ESL lamps is **between 0.95 and 0.4**.
* **An approximate maximum:** multiply the dimmer's load capacity by the power factor of the lamp.

Example: a dimmer rated 300 W at cos φ = 1 and a lamp with cos φ = 0.5 gives roughly 150 W of lamp power.

Do not mix kinds of light sources, do not dim energy-saving bulbs that are not marked dimmable, and a wrong load-type setting can overheat the dimmer. How to set the load type is in [Tutorial 3](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-3-dimming-and-light-scenes.md).
