# Appendix C: Which transmitter works with which receiver

The rules for which controllers and detectors can be paired with which receivers: RFIO and RFIO2, old and new controllers, compatibility mode.

*Appendices. Read with the* [*Pairing reference*](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md)*.*

Most iNELS Wireless transmitters can be paired with most receivers. The exceptions are old controllers, detectors, shutter units and a few units that pair in their own way. This page collects the rules.

| **Older controllers** without a pairing button | Yes, in normal or compatibility mode — see section 4 | Yes, same rules | Yes, same rules |
| **Detectors** RFMD-100, RFWD-100, RFSF-100 | Yes, but only units marked **RFIO2** | Yes, units marked RFIO2 (for example RFDEL-71B-SL); check the unit's page for others | **No** — detectors cannot be paired with shutter units |
| **System units** (eLAN, RF Touch, RFTC-3) | Yes, by the address printed on the unit | Yes, same | Yes, same |

{% hint style="info" %}
RFSAI-62B-SL, RFSA-62B and RFDAC-71B pair a little differently from the rest. Always follow the unit's own page for them ([Appendix A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/appendix-a-prog-button-times.md) has their PROG times).
{% endhint %}

## 2. RFIO and RFIO2

The radio language of the system is called **RFIO**. A newer version, **RFIO2**, is fully compatible with RFIO and adds more. Units that carry the RFIO2 mark can do the following:

* **Work with older RFIO products.** Backward compatibility is kept.
* **Act as a repeater** for other units. This is switched on with the RFAF/USB service key.
* **Have their firmware updated** with the RFAF/USB service key.
* **Communicate with the RFMD-100 and RFWD-100 detectors.**
* **Pass on messages:** other receivers in range can help carry a message to a receiver that is out of reach.

In unit manuals the same family is also written as "iNELS RF Control2 (RFIO2)". Older manuals call the whole system "iNELS RF Control".

{% hint style="info" %}
Look for the RFIO2 mark on the unit or on its page to see whether it supports these functions.
{% endhint %}

## 3. Old and new controllers

Controllers come in two generations, by factory version.

|                                       | Newer controllers                                                                                                     | Older controllers                                                                                                          |
| ------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Pairing button and symbol on the back | **Yes** | No |
| How you start pairing | Hold the pairing button 1 s ([Pairing reference, section A](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md)) | Remove the battery for at least 5 s and put it back ([section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md)) |
| Pairing mode | Always the "RFIO2" way: controller **and** unit both go into pairing mode | Normal mode (double flash) or compatibility mode (fast flash) |

Newly produced controllers work in RFIO2 mode and are taught to a unit differently from before. This prevents a random controller in range from being learned by mistake. A controller can still be switched into **compatibility mode** to pair the older, simpler way.

#### Which mode is my controller in?

| LED on the controller | Mode |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ------------------- |
| **Double flash** (flash, flash, gap, flash, flash) | Normal / RFIO2 mode |
| **Fast flashing**                                  | Compatibility mode  |

To change the mode, remove the battery for at least 5 s and put it back. While the red LED is lit (3 s), press and hold two buttons together until the LED shows the new mode, then release:

| Controller            | Buttons to hold |
| --------------------- | --------------- |
| RFWB, RFGB (standard) | 1 and 2         |
| RF KEY-40 / RF KEY-60 | **1 and 3**     |

Keep holding until the LED shows the new mode (double flash or fast flashing), then release.

Controllers that have a PROG button offer a second way: hold it for 8 s. The LED under the button lights while it is held. After 8 s it shows the new mode with double flash or fast flashing. Each 8 s press switches to the other mode.

## 4. Rules for the oldest controllers

1. **You cannot tell in advance** whether an older controller and an older unit need compatibility mode. Try normal mode first, then compatibility mode. ([Pairing reference, section B](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md))
2. The oldest **RF Key/W** and **RF Key/B** key fobs, and other controllers of the oldest version, **cannot** be paired with units that have the **radio-wave mark** on the PROG button.
3. **RFSAI-62B-SL, RFSA-62B and RFDAC-71B** pair differently from other units. Follow their own page.
4. In compatibility mode the number of presses gives **functions 1–6 for switch units** and **1–8 for dimmers**.
5. Leave 1 s between presses in every mode.

## 5. Which function table does a receiver use?

The number of presses means different things on different receivers.

| Receiver family                   | Units                                                                                                       | Presses                                                             | Table                                                                                                  |

| **Shutter units** | RFJA | Not counted: first button = up, the other half of the rocker = down | [Pairing reference, section E](/inels-home/inels-wireless/pairing-and-configuration.md) |

## 6. Detectors

A detector behaves like a controller, but it is paired when the **batteries are inserted**, and it needs a receiver marked **RFIO2**.

| Detector | Can be paired with |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **RFWD-100** window/door | RFSA-61B, RFSA-62B, RFSAI-61B, RFSA-61M, RFSA-66M, RFSC-61, RFUS-61 (only units marked RFIO2). System units eLAN-RF-003, eLAN-RF-Wi-003                                                                      |
| **RFSF-100** flood | All switching units of the system **except blind units** that are marked RFIO2 (for example RFSA-11B, RFSA-61M, RFSA-66M, RFUS-61, RFSC-61). System units eLAN-RF, RF Touch, iNELS BUS central units CU3-0xM |
| **RFMD-100** motion      | Switching units marked RFIO2 and eLAN-RF system units                                                                                                                                                        |

The detector's DIP switch tells it whether it is paired directly with a unit (position OFF) or connected to a system unit such as a gateway (position ON). See [Tutorial 5](/inels-home/inels-wireless/tutorial-5-detectors-motion-light-door-or-window-flood.md) for where the switch is.

## 7. Transmitters of the system

These controllers are the transmitters of the system:

* **Surface or wall mounted:** RFWB-20/MPW, RFWB-40/MPW, RFWB-20/G, RFWB-40/G, RFWB-40G/MT, RFGB-20, RFGB-40, RFGB-40B/MT, RFGB-40W/MT, RFGB-220, RFGB-240, RFTC-10/G, RFTC-50/G.
* **Flush mounted:** RFSK-21/MPW, RFDK-21/MPW, RFJK-22/MPW, RF Touch-2, RFDW-71, RFDW-271, RFSW-62, RFSW-62/S, RFSW-22, RFSW-42, RFGS-30/S, RFMB-22, RFMB-42, RFMB-62.

Some of these also have an output of their own (for example RFSK-21/MPW with a relay), so they are transmitter and receiver at once. See [Transmitters, receivers and gateways](/inels-home/inels-wireless/transmitters-receivers-and-gateways.md).
